A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
