Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Fighters Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a diverse cast of characters, and a exciting storyline featuring divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences increasing in power within the urban setting.

Warning: Key plot points for the latest installment of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The third episode ended with a major cliffhanger and presented the first table of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to begin their independent quest, separate from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table includes the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura), the fierce warrior (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, intertwining the characters’ stories before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for participants who prefer a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the group knows exactly where to head next after a brutal initial meeting with the antagonists.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose death started the narrative’s action—used the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering the secret base, attacking Thimble, and stealing all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The antagonist then settled his obligations and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each member has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the region and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The strong character and The healer, having defied his family’s wishes to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their position as prominent individuals in the influential clan could enable the group enter locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, The fighter swore a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his salvation and will now accompany him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are hunted by the rulers that govern the city for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • Thimble and The hero are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric defied the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The target is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to travel to the remote area in quest for Casimir.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party won’t be around the following episode, leaving the rest of the cast members to assemble the Seekers and Strategists tables.

Audiences can expect learning which characters will be where in the story’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
