Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
