A recent study reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
